The West Australian Institute of Further Studies

CRICOS code:

The West Australian Institute of Further Studies, better known as WAIFS, is a young institute and as a reflection, we have chosen orange as our signature colour. See orange, think of WAIFS! The colour reflects the fresh approach we have taken to training and services towards our students. We offer the perfect combination of private sector service standards, world class resources, and the academic guarantee of qualifications approved by the Australian Government.

In 2010 WAIFS opened its doors for the first time. We started with 15 students and one campus; today we have over 1,200 enrolments each year and two campuses.

In this short time university pathways and advanced standing for our qualifications with a number of universities are just a few of our achievements. We are approved by the Australian Government to participate in traineeship programmes and delivering courses under the PIT (Priority Industry Training) scheme for local students, which means you may find yourself studying with Australians as well as other nationalities.

Our latest milestone was becoming an approved 572 Streamlined Visa Processing Provider. In 2014 the Department of Immigration and Border Protection approved WAIFS, as one of the elite group of registered training organisations in Australia, to become a 572 VET-sector streamlined visa processing provider, which means student visa applicants are generally subject to lower evidentiary requirements, similar to Assessment Level 1, irrespective of the passport the student holds.

Our campuses

Our main campus in Joondalup, just a twenty five minute drive north of Perth. The city of Joondalup has a relaxed, casual atmosphere with cultural, civic, commercial and residential properties built on the edge of Lake Joondalup. The surrounding regions are renowned for their white sandy beaches and unpolluted environment. Visitors and locals alike go to Lake Joondalup to relax and have a barbeque at one of the many picnic spots. In the town centre, a major retail centre (the biggest in Western Australia) offers shoppers a huge range of goods from high street stores to specialist shops. Train and bus terminals, medical centres, universities, sporting venues and commercial centres are all within a short distance. Students don’t need to worry about nightlife activities, as there is a large variety of great restaurants, cafes, pubs and clubs in Joondalup.

Our Highgate campus complements the main Joondalup campus, and provides a more central alternative for students. The campus is within walking distance of Perth Central train station and of the popular shopping and eating strip (especially the suburbs of Mt Lawley and Inglewood). Beaufort Street is also well serviced by public transport with a bus stop directly outside the WAIFS campus.

We are proud of our academic outcomes and are dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning, striving to be recognised as a school which maximises learning opportunities to ensure students finish with a clear and focused pathway after their studies. WAIFS trains in the following areas:

  • Accounting
  • Business
  • Management
  • Aged care
  • Children’s services
  • Community sector management
  • Dental assisting/dental technology
  • Work health and safety

Our courses have multiple start dates, attractive timetables and offer strong pathways to university.

Practical placements are included in a number of our courses. The placements are arranged by WAIFS, as we believe that it is essential for students to gain practical experience during their studies. One good example of this is our children’s services programme. Here’s is what one of our students has to say about her experience:

“My name is Maeva. I am from France and I am 24 years old. The course I am following is the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. This course is really helpful and gives me all the knowledge and the skills I need to be a good professional qualified educator. I like WAIFS because the teachers and other staff members are very qualified, friendly, supportive and give me all the skills I need to improve myself. I have found a part time job as a coordinator assistant in a new childcare service in Nedlands which gives me the opportunity to improve my skills, to put in practice what I have learned, and to progress in this industry that I love. If you want a career that you love and want the knowledge and the skills to get to your dream job, don’t think twice and go for it!”

We wish you all the best in your decision to study in Australia. Please contact us via Study Options ( who will guide you through the enrolment process.
